Ecotourism

sp

Tourism contributes to trade and investment, generates substantial employment and accounts for an increasing share of the Gross Domestic Product of CAFTA-DR countries.  The region’s exceptional biodiversity makes it a prime destination for ecotourists—people who travel to a place to experience its natural environment and to learn about its culture and natural history.  At its best, ecotourism protects ecosystems and provides economic benefits to local people.  At less than its best, it can be destructive to ecosystems and communities who live in or near them.

Ecotourists necessarily have an impact on the natural environment:  They must be transported, lodged and fed; provided means and activities to facilitate their enjoyment and appreciation of the environments they came to experience; and educated about how to make sure they do not damage flora and fauna.

In short, tourism development must accommodate the needs of ecotourists and, at the same time, ensure preservation of the environment.

In our Ecotourism Activities, we work to promote conservation based on market interests.  We build the capacity of communities and tourism operators to meet the needs of ecotourists and to generate income from ecotourism, while at the same time preserving the environment.

  • Capacity to Provide Services, by improving basic, management and marketing skills
  • Markets & Linkages, by establishing business reputation based on adoption of best ecotourism practices and certification for sustainable tourism, and by creating linkages to improve services and broaden the ecotourism market

They have also laid down their slingshots—basic equipment for capturing birds for sale as pets.

Ecolodge Management.  Held at Finca Esperanza Verde, an award-winning community ecolodge near Matagalpa. Nicaragua, a workshop on running a tourism operation, for members of Caminos Del Viento and COSERTUCHACO, ecotourism cooperatives working in the Chacocente Wildlife Reserve. Ecotourism, centered on viewing wildlife, such as endangered sea turtle species, offers an income-generating alternative to poaching.
