Theme b Biodiversity & Conservation

Promoting Sustainable Ecosystem Management sp

The third area under Theme B “Biodiversity & Conservation” is Promoting Sustainable Ecosystem Management.  Program Activities concentrate on management of forests and areas designated as protected or in particular danger of harmful exploitation—a focus closely related to Combating Illegal Trade in Endangered Species and Protecting Wildlife—and on improving communities’ integrated environmental performance.

We support comprehensive strategies and plans which promote a combination of government, user and community action to improve ecosystem management.

  • Government Action, to address protection of a particular ecosystem in a comprehensive fashion:  Instituting proper laws, regulations and guidelines for use of protected areas, improving staff capabilities and creating incentives for local support and participation

  • User and Community Action, to motivate users and locals to limit their impact on fragile environments:  Information for visitors and local people about the importance of protected areas and initiatives with local communities to adopt sound environmental practices

Illegal Trafficking.  Work with governments to prepare law enforcement needs assessments for protected areas, including strategies to reduce illegal trafficking and incentive-based tools to enlist community support

Forest Protection:  For the Government of Honduras, an analysis of law enforcement in protected areas, including recommendations for forest management, timber and trade controls, and a national strategy for legal, sustainable harvest and trade of mahogany and other forest products

Fire and Invasive Species.  Workshop with key government officials of the Dominican Republic and representatives of NGOs to initiate collaboration on long-term efforts to manage forest fires and invasive species

Public Use Guidelines.  At the request of the Government of Honduras, development of guidelines to minimize human impact on protected areas

Park Management Training.  To strengthen model park management components on how to minimize impact on resources while providing economic incentives to local communities to protect jaguar habitat in the Mirador area of Northern Guatemala

Trust Fund.  Assistance to develop and negotiate mechanisms for operating a Protected Areas Trust Fund in the Dominican Republic. The fund, capitalized by government and international donors, will finance conservation activities, improved management and research in protected areas.

Interpretive Panels.  Design of interpretive panels for La Flor Wildlife Refuge in Nicaragua, regarding tropical dry forests and sea turtle nesting areas—Visitor Information, environmental facts, Rules and Regulations, and other topics

Training and Incentives for Local People.  Intensive training, as well as compensation, for a community leader to manage a team of beach rangers, all former poachers, to protect the nesting grounds of endangered sea turtles

Support for Community Action. Technical assistance and training for municipal and community leaders in Las Galeras, Dominican Republic, leading to agreement on rules to ban spillage of raw sewage near the water, control dumping of residuals, manage noise pollution, prohibit fishing that threatens coastal marine wildlife and monitor pollution from burning trees and household waste

Ecosystem Management by Cacao Growers.  Work with farmers to raise awareness of the importance of managing water use and waste disposal and of respecting wildlife.  For more, click on image.
