Welcome to the CAFTA-DR Environmental Cooperation Program Website!

Our program began when five Central American countries, the Dominican Republic and the United States entered into an Agreement on Environmental Cooperation and the Dominican Republic-Central America-United States Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA-DR), under which they agreed to cooperate to protect, conserve and improve the environment to advance their goal of sustainable development for the benefit of present and future generations.

Environmental protection involves the joint efforts of government and civil society, including non-governmental organizations, the private sector and the general public. All of these sectors are involved in the program. We concentrate on four “themes”: Building institutional strength to improve and enforce environmental laws, and to engage the public in decision-making, preserving biodiversity and habitat, promoting market-based conservation and encouraging private business to adopt environmentally sound practices.

Please explore our website! For how our program originated and developed, see the Overview. For what we do, go to Themes and Activities. For who is involved, check out People. For where we work, see Countries. For just the basics, go to the Info Kit.
